Antique Hand-colored Lithographs

Walter Hood Fitch was one of the most productive and talented botanical artists of the Victorian era. A professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, Fitch had a marvelous power of visualizing plants as they lived, and retaining their image in his memory. One of his most important achievements is his collection of illustrations created for W.J. Hookers "A Century of Orchidaceous Plants" in 1851. His work with stone-lithography brought the orchid to life, and his coloring was uniquely bold.
